What does sin smell like?

This past week I have been reading through the wonderful book of Leviticus. Yep that is right isn’t that a great devotional time book. One of the residences challenged other men to read Leviticus, so I am. I have gotten 7 chapters in and well I am struck by something amazing.

When we see drawings of the Tabernacle we see it clean, white, or off white. After reading the first 7 chapters of the book white is the last color I would say is the color of the tabernacle. I also imagine the place smelt like rotten flesh. Every day all day long the priest would slaughter animals, sprinkle the blood, and cook the entrails along with other parts. Over a generation of time in any type of heat, that has to stink and look a very dark red/brown look to it. I can imagine the place having a hint of BBQ smell with a strong odor of rotten flesh. So when one walked into the tabernacle all they could realize is how much their sin reeked to God. We try to cover it up with nice smells, good deeds, and the reality is we STINK.

I wonder why we make the Christian faith from a Rated R to a Rated G? Scripture is filled with things that show me that this is a very bloody religion because blood is what is called for when dealing with sin.

Today, if you read this, just realize the only way one even smells acceptable to God is because of the covering of Christ on the cross. The only way to celebrate life today is to realize we have a hope through the resurrection of Christ and that He is sitting on the right hand of God.

I think this just touches………..okay…….smeers…….on the subject of appearance. We as a society are so appearance driven it’s just silly. Even in churches. I know one where the women “are counciled” to wear long dresses with sleeves. The men to wear a shirt(preferably white) and a tie. A suit preferably if you want to make a good impression. Does God really care what we wear??? Isn’t everything Jesus talked about in the NT about our SPIRITUAL life???
