Christian American Idol- Oxymoron?

Ok, so I watched the end of American Idol last night to see who won (DVR rocks!). I can’t say I was stunned to see Kris win, but I was disappointed. And I felt bad about being disappointed- or at least a little confused.

I guess I haven’t been paying enough attention to the whole thing, but I didn’t find out until this week that Kris was a committed Christian and a worship leader at a church in Arkansas. So as time drew closer for the finals this week and the big reveal last night, I began to feel like I was supposed to root for him- because he’s a Christian.

See I don’t think Kris can sing all that well. At least not as good as Adam or Danny Gokey- who should have been in the finals with Adam, but that’s another story. I have never voted on AI, but if I had this week I would have voted for Adam.

Why? Because, as Simon likes to say, its a singing competition, and I think Adam wins a singing competition hands down. Am I supposed to vote for Kris because he’s a Christian, even though I find his product to be sub-par? Am I supposed to not vote for Adam because I think he’s androgynous at best and effeminate at worst and I want a stronger male presence as the next Idol- because I’m a Christian?

Furthermore, isn’t it weird to call Kris the Christian American Idol? Isn’t that whole idea kind of not biblical? Dude- before you release hate-comments back to me, I am not bashing Kris as a person. But in the world of entertainment and singing competitions, Adam is the bomb. Kris is a nice guy with a nice voice who has nice artistic interpretations of songs.

I get that he’s a Christian- weren’t Jason Castro, Gokey, Dolittle, Mandisa and Chris Sligh also Believers? I don’t think I would have voted for any of them to be the best in their years either, because I didn’t think they were the best. There’s a weird vibe going around that its the ‘Christian’ thing to do to have voted for Kris. And I think its weird.

Its probably weirder that I’m a Christian pastor that watches American Idol at all….

It would be like voting for AC Green to win the NBA MVP award becaus of his beliefs. It is te MVP, not the MVC (Most Valuable Chridtian). It’s hard not to root for a like-minded individual, but in the end it boils down to what the award is really for. Nothing wrong in simply praying that the one is used by God to bring the other to Christ, right? And I don’t even watch the show!

Well, then again, the entire thing is vanity. America wants it’s idols desperately, and it gets them. I will say I agree with the singing assesment, but on the pure artistic/musician side Kris’s anointing was much stronger. Goliath had the height and weight advantage, but David had 5 smooth stones. At least America still votes for the heterosexual and us not quite ready to exalt as it’s Idol a openly gay winner. However, the we are on that precipice for sure. But again, to quote the preacher “it is ALL vanity”.
